Onam (ഓണം) celebration in Sweden by Malayalees in Sweden.
Description:
Onam (Malayalam: ഓണം) is a State-wide Harvest festival with Hindu mythological background festival celebrated in Kerala, India.
Onam Festival falls during the Malayalam month of Chingam (Aug - Sep) and marks the commemoration of Vamana avatara of Vishnu and the subsequent homecoming of mythical King Mahabali. Onam is reminiscent of Kerala's agrarian past, as it is considered to be a harvest festival.
Onam celebration in Sweden has started with a few Malayalis in 1990's as heard and it remained in closed group. But since 2012 we tried to invite all known Malayalees within Stockholm and in Sweden as well to celebrate Onam together. As Onam always has been the event where new Malayalis were introduced to the existing community and thereby melt and merge into a big extended family and feel at home in Sweden.
Over the years, the Malayalee community has grown to a substantial number and to accommodate all Onam celebrating Malayalis, the venue was moved from private homes to community halls. All work done in connection with Onam celebration is completely voluntary and altruistic.
